Songs about time, #2

I’ve always thought Electric Light Orchestra would enjoy a warmer verdict from posterity if Jeff Lynne had put as much effort into his lyrics as he put into his melodies. However, in 1981 he got everything just right with his science fiction concept album, Time.
This track, Ticket To the Moon, is one of the few songs where I can remember exactly what I was doing when I first heard it. It was a weekday morning, I’d done my paper round, had breakfast, and was just about to head out of the door to walk to school, when on the radio the piano began and I heard that line: “Remember the good old 1980s…”
Sometimes it seems like yesterday, but, today, instead of tickets to the moon we got smart phones that aren’t especially smart, and instead of a bright future of technological advancement, today we stand on the brink of the corporate dystopia science fiction writers have been warning us about for decades.
Anyway, it’s still a good tune, and what a gorgeous opening lyric, eh? 🙂
